I Wrote a Story Under the Cancun Sun

A story I knew would be a tough one to get out from beginning to end. Since it was so personal, I figured I'd write it best with a clear head and an open heart. And I did so months ago while gazing at the sea with the sound of waves crashing in the background. No distractions, no influences and cut off from the people I knew. I just wanted to listen to what I had been trying to say.

A story about how my parents' dysfunctional relationship and their subsequent divorce affected my thoughts on marriage and my first relationship. Yes, I cried through it. Yes, I questioned whether I was comfortable setting my story free. But I also hoped it would touch someone who had gone through the same.

Well, it's finally out.

    Congratulations!
    The journalist side of you has to be super proud. I know writing the story had to be hard, but I'm glad you did it. It will probably help someone else to read it and see that they aren't alone. I hope you frame a copy, if not for anything more than just to show yourself that you did it.

    Aww, thanks so much Kelsey! That was so sweet. Yeah, I've written plenty before, but this one's pretty close to my heart. And I am proud. Mostly because exactly one year ago, I read the first essay we published in the March 2008 issue and said, "I want to get an essay published, too." And it happened.

    Now, when are we going to read yours?

    Writing personal stories and then WAITING for responses....can be deafening. I hope it rings with relief in your case.

    For some reason I was more nervous about my own coworkers and other people I know reading it! The opinions of people close to me hold a lot more weight. But their response so far has been great and very humbling :)

    Congratulations on getting your story published! I'm sure all your co-workers have been very supportive and complimentary about your article. Hopefully you'll write another one soon about something fantastic that has happened as a result of experiencing what you did.

    No, it's only in the magazine actually. You'll find my stuff on pgs. 29, 63, 70, 74, and the essay on 76. Phew! May is even more exhausting.

    And THAT'S why I hadn't been posting as regularly :)

    valerie, I usually write for the lifestyle section so I've covered health, career & money, love & sex, home stuff and just overall well being. It's fun! I also write a monthly column about what charity work Latino celebs are doing or how they're trying to help our community. That one's been a gratifying one to write for the past year.

    And online I've written about celebs, politics, parenting and health news as well.
