I Can't Cook to Save My Life

And yet here I am planning a dinner party for this Sunday. I invited some of the girls over for yummy food and drinks and though the menu is "set" (I still have to find recipes for the things I'd like to make), I'm just hoping I don't set the whole place on fire. I'm even making cute little recipe cards to set on the table! In fact, that could very well be the most appealing thing on it.

But this will be a good chance for me to practice my (nonexistent) cooking skills, try out some new dishes, have plenty of leftovers for the week ahead and get my friends to come for a visit. It seems that living in an outer borough, no matter how close to the island you are, doesn't make for many visitors.

Do you guys have any dinner party tips to share? I'd love to hear your ideas!

  3. That's so exciting!
If you already know some of the ingredients you plan on using, allrecipes.com has a good search engine that runs by either name-of-dish or by whatever ingredients you plug into it. Plus, people rate and give feedback on the recipes, so you have other people's experience to lean into!
    Whatever you do, enjoy!!

  4. I agree with keeping it simple. And relax, your friends are there to spend time with you.

  5. It's going to be SO fun! That's the main thing to keep in mind - your friends are going because they want to spend time with you. So relax and enjoy yourself!

Are you making a full dinner? Or just apps? Either way, go with simple, fresh ingredients. It doesn't have to be fancy to taste good.

    Good luck!

  8. Good luck! I love that picture you picked - that was actually my inspiration for the centerpiece at my wedding. :)

Prep everything ahead of time so when you guests arrive all you have to do is put it together and/or heat up. This way you will get more time with your guests instead of cooking.

  10. Well good for you...go out on a limb! I used to get all stressed out over my dinner parties and then realized that the company is truly the best part. Relax and enjoy your friends. I like to keep things simple - less stress for me. I recently had dinner with friends and my menu included.... salad with strawberries (tis the season you know)...offer a few light vinagarette dressings (they come in lots of yummy flavors). Main course was a vegetable/chicken kabob...I have an awesome recipe - email me if you want it. Chocolate is good for dessert...I usually bake brownies (if you find ghiradelli brand you've hit the jackpot) and then a fruit salad. How can you go wrong? If it is hot and you want a cold dish...broil up some chicken breasts in advance and serve over salad with lots of yummy stuff to add with the bread. Simple!

  12. A clear wide mouth bottle seeded with some change and a couple dollar bills ought to get you some tips. :)

Seriously - just open the wine and have some crackers first - no one will be too critical about your cooking afterwards. I have a hutch you will be the "worst critic". :)

  13. I like Intense Guy's comments...LOL Start with wine....nothing can be so bad after a few drinks! And I seriously doubt it'll be bad...no real tips from me though....the greatest extent my "dinner parties" get to are mac and cheese and hot dogs. :)

  14. I suck at cooking, so I applaud you. We have dinner partied too, but with Scott at the helm. He's the cook. I just do the 'side' things like salads and setting the table.

    Way to go, Dorkys!!
