A U.S. Airways plane just crashed into the Hudson River not far from where I work. A bird strike is said to have caused engine malfunction as the plane was taking off from La Guardia Airport. Right now passengers are being rescued and I can hear the fire engines making their way to the crash site. Let's hope no one was injured.
P.S. I'm flying out in the morning. Let's hope JFK has their stuff together and that the geese have vacated the premises when I fly back into La Guardia Sunday night.
UPDATE: Here's an updated CNN.com article. No one was hurt and all 146 passengers and 5 crew members have been rescued.

Keeping all involved in my thoughts.
ReplyDeleteso freaking scary. I was just watching it on the news for the last hour. I think everyone is okay. But sheesh! so scary!
ReplyDeleteI am here to give mad props to that pilot. He managed to GLIDE not plunge into the river and I heard he's so familiar with the river that he chose that area because it was the least steep. His calm, cool, and collectedness played a major part in keeping this crash from becoming an even bigger tragedy...
ReplyDeleteI know. I was just telling my coworker thank goodness it was in the river and not on land. Lord knows there's not a clear spot in midtown.
ReplyDeleteI know!!! where the hell would they land?
ReplyDeletea) on top of cabs
b) on top of ppl
c) ram into a bldg
d) all of the above
There is NO WHERE!
Maybe your buddy Bloomberg should invest in an emergency landing strip. I'm thinking retractable roofs extending from each building on Broadway.
ReplyDeleteI'll 311 that right now =]

ReplyDeleteI watched it all on TV and Lou Dobbs had passengers on his show. I can't imagine what must have been going through their heads! They must have been FREEZING. I saw pictures where there is snow on the ground and these poor people were in the water.
ReplyDeleteGood luck on your flight! Hope the birds don't run into your plane!
We'll be thinking about you. Where are you going, anywhere fun? Did I miss a post about it...? Should I scroll back and re-read?
ReplyDeleteBrrrr... yesterday (or today) was not the kind of day I'd want to go for a swim in the Hudson River.
ReplyDeleteWhat an amazing story! Everyone was so lucky to have made it through that safely.
