Almost Reunited and It Feels So...Blah

Shortly after graduating Brooklyn Technical High School, I wondered where life would take us over the next 10 years. I wondered who'd be married, who'd have children and if there'd be any secret scandals that had developed over time. Would we act like the mature adults we'd surely be by that time? Would we even still be friends? Back then, our reunion felt like a lifetime away.

And now that its finally here, I'm feeling completely unenthused. I'm not really dying to see anyone I've lost touch with (yes, I'm horrid, whatever) and I'm still close with my high school BFFs. I also had the great luck (or great curse) of never having dated or crushed on the boys in my high school so there's no one I'm trying to reconnect with on that end (and no one I'm wishing morbid obesity and baldness on). Come to think of it, in a school of 4,000 that's a quite a feat!

Thing is Facebook totally killed the high school reunion anticipation. Classmates, Friendster, Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, all of it. There's no more "I wonder how so-and-so is doing" because so-and-so is probably on Facebook announcing every detail of her life and guess what? She just got engaged to un papi chulo she met two years ago! (Like!) And that other guy you'd known since junior high? Yup, still single and acting a fool. And while I'm not knocking it (hey, I've been all up on that news feed these days), there's very little surprise and suspense left. For me anyway.

So I'm just going to go, not front like I remember anybody's name, chill with the girls I still hang with to this day and sass anyone who asks if I'm married or having children anytime soon. True story.

  1. You're not horrid, I feel the same way. I have no plans to attend my 20 year reunion in a few years
(20??!!! eek). I just see that as a small part of my life where nothing is gained by revisiting it. I know how my friends from that time are doing...

  2. Facebook almost made me more excited to go to my reunion, which was last year, as I had forgotten so many people but had enjoyed talking with them on facebook so wanted to see them again in real life... but my reunion was in October, shortly after my son started school back in the midwest so I didn't make it.

  3. Personally, I think if you spent that long not keeping in touch chances are a short reunion where everyone is trying to talk to everyone else in as short a time as possible so as to fit everyone in isn't going to do much to change that. OK, I expect there's the odd time that friends/old flames hook up at reunions and it's like they were never apart, etc, etc. But with facebook and such now most people who want to get in touch find each other somehow anyway.

  4. wow. I completely understand. You do what you got to do. I missed my 25th but after I saw pictures posted on FB I don't feel like I missed a single thing...

  5. Happy SITS saturday sharefest! I have not gotten into the Facebook thing mainly because there is no one in my past I wish to contact (sad I know). But I can see how it would ruin reunions. The fun of going is hearing all of the stuff everyone has been through but Facebook leaves none of that to the imagination. Maybe all reunions should just be done on Facebook. You could read all you need to know and then move on. No need for travel or anything.

  6. I completely understand. I have always said that I keep in touch with the people I want to keep in touch with. I don't need a reunion to do that!

  7. Our class was so unorganized we never even had a reunion. I feel the same way as you. I have remained friends with the people I was close to and if I haven't seen the others since 1993 then I guess I can live fine without them.

I hope you have a great time with your friends!

my mom asked me if i'd go to my reunion. i said "why not? i can't say no to a free meal." she told me you have to pay to go. then i decided against it. totally not worth it.

  12. I never went to any of my High School reunions and only one my College reunions... and the big news??

A lot of the guys got heavier and bald and most of the girls still had no idea I even existed. :)

So much for excitement. Hope you enjoy though... maybe someone still has a secret scandal to share with you.

  14. I don't know what I expected from my 10-year-reunion, but I basically spent it the same way I did high school. Sitting in a corner with my BFF, watching everyone else have fun and thinking they are all idiots.

  15. See, no surprises anymore. The feeling of anticipation is taken from us at every turn. And people question why I don't find out the gender of my babies.

    I LIKE SURPRISES AND WONDERING!!!

Simple as that. :) It makes it fun.

I already know how the reunion went, so I'll spare you the "rah rah rah" let's feel good speech.

  16. You're not horrid. I'm the same way and I've been out of highschool for over 20 years. No desire to see anyone there at all. Well, maybe a couple of them. However, since I was for the most part invisible.... I doubt any remember me either.
