What's the Saddest Christmas Song Ever?

I challenge you to say anything other than "Christmas Shoes." I could be rocking around the Christmas tree having the time of my life and then take a sharp detour straight into Depressionville when this damn song comes on. And do I turn it off? Hell no. I pump it up and sing along! ¡Para sufrir con gusto!

So if you ever want to take your holiday happy down a notch or ten, give the song a listen. Seriously, it gets to me every single time.

Here's what comedian Patton Oswalt has to say about the jolly little song:

  1. I Cry the Day That I Take the Tree Down has stuck with me since I was a very young teen. It's from a collection called The Forgotten Carols.

  2. And with good reason, I bet. I'd want to block that one, too

  4. Easy... I'll Be Home For Christmas. This one's been a problem song for me since I was a kid because gramma's place was always very special around Christmas time (we ended up with 2 visits from Santa .. one at our place and one at hers). When she decided to move from NY to Fl (clear across the country from us!!!!)...the song became a problem for me. As I get older and with no family around or kids of my own, this song is an absolute killer to listen to. This year, I've not been able to listen to it even once (wont go into the fact I haven't been able to listen to ANY standard this year....).

  5. You know what's another melancholic one for me? "Same Old Lang Syne". "Met my old lover at the grocery store. The snow was falling Christmas eve..."

  6. Dear Mr. Jesus.

It's not exactly a Christmas song, but that's the only time I ever hear it.

  7. I completely agree with you! Christmas Shoes is the saddest song ever. I nearly cry every time I hear it. I'm visiting from TOOJ's site (she is my cousin).

  9. A little belated, but my two saddest Christmas songs are: "Hard Candy Christmas" by Dolly Parton (she's spending Christmas alone, telling about all the things she'll do alone, while trying to convince someone she'll be fine) and "I Guess There Ain't No Santa Claus" by Barry Manilow.
